I would like to express my deepest appreciation to Don Beyer Volvo in Falls Church, VA (www.donbeyervolvo.com) and Volvo International (www.volvocars.com/) for donating a 2007 Volvo S40 to me to advance my work to prevent domestic violence. The car was presented to me at the dealership on August 19, 2006. Police officers and deputies from jurisdictions surrounding Washington, DC attended the event in support of crime victims and survivors. Several public officials or their representatives also attended.
I will update this area to include the names and agencies of the law enforcement officers and deputies and the public officials that attended.
I ask that you take a moment to send an Email to Volvo and thank them for their support in this effort to make the community safer through raising awareness to domestic violence prevention. The link goes directly to Don Beyer Volvo and Volvo International... yvettecade@donbeyervolvo.com
I would also like to share with you the story of how Don Beyer Volvo came to donate a car to me. The production company Magnifique (www.magnifique.us) presented "INFINITAS," a dramatic musical that deals with domestic violence and redemption, at the Rachael M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Art Center in Alexandria, VA during July 2006. I was asked to be the special guest on opening night.
One of the attendees at the production was Don Beyer Volvo Business Manager, Mr. Warren Harper. Mr. Harper heard from the "INFINITAS" cast that I got around on public transportation and on the kindness of my friends and family since my (former) car was unreliable. Mr. Harper took my situation to owners Mike and Don Beyer at the dealership. They approved the car donation and approached Volvo International in Sweden to help. Together, they made it possible for me to be able to follow the new course that my life has taken.
I would not be able to pursue my passion to prevent domestic violence without my own transportation. My burn injuries continue to hinder my mobility and public transportation is very difficult for me at this time.
Don Beyer Volvo and Volvo International could have donated me any car and I would have been very happy and blessed. That they chose to donate a new car to me underscores their commitment to the community. Again, I am deeply appreciative to Volvo, the cast of "INFINITAS" and the supporters whose links appear on this website.
Also during the "INFINITAS" production run, the cast approached Regent University (www.regent.edu) on my behalf to obtain a scholarship for me to complete a Bachelor's degree in Communication. I already have an Associates degree in computer science. Since being set on fire by my former husband, my life has involved media interviews on "Oprah," "Nancy Grace" and many television news programs along with press interviews.
Since this is the avenue that my life seems to be taking, it makes sense to me to prepare for the future with a degree in communication. I am thankful that Regent University wanted to help. This will enable me to support my young daughter and become a better public speaker, advocate, and support for others.
I am committed to do all I can do for others and return the kindness that has been shown to me. I want people to know that when they face tragedy and in the words of "Infinitas," they are never alone. I ask for your encouragement and for your prayers that I will be faithful to complete my mission. As a woman of faith, I depend on God for my daily existence and strength. I pray that God will use me to lessen the suffering of others.
